Episode 1: Mirror Universes
Mirror Universes. What are they, where do they come from, what is the point of this whole thing?
Because there's nothing worse than a depressive like me going on all of the time.
Mirror Universes.
The popular concept originally came from Star Trek, and has been used in many forms of stories in the series, from comics to books to the tv shows and spin-offs. Marvel are entering into it with the multiverse. We've just had Spider-Man, and we are soon to have Doctor Strange.
Doctor Who also got in on the act, but that can be more timey-wimey than multi-mirror.
The idea was actually first theorised in Ancient Greece, who considered that a multiverse was created by colliding atoms. This was called Atomism. The concept became more defined in the Middle Ages, as thoughts turned more philosophical and where alternate realities were considered.
Since 2010 research has been done by scientists to see if this is a reality. Seeing as our idea of time being linear is questioned, and the universe expanding. Our understanding of energy, matter, time, space, laws and constants changes frequently. It is quite possible there are alternate versions of Earth in the universe, which could have an alternate human race. We could be more developed or less.
Another concept dreamt up was that of Sliding Doors. That every decision we make causes a split and different realities. They made a film about that, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. This is also explored in Marvel.
The concept is explored in literature, with the "what if" scenarios about wars and leaders. We like to guess these things, and that is because of our wonderful imagination...
Imaginations help us to come to decisions based on possible outcomes of our actions. This is useful, as it is our way of trying to make the right decision. Sometimes, the choice is of two bad options and you have to choose the least worst. We don’t like that, Hobson's Choice. However our lives are made up of choices, and instead of shying away from that we should embrace it for the positive thing that it is. Life is a choice. Just ask Camus. His very question was to decide whether or not to live today.
We choose existence, or not, every day. It appears to be a habit when we can’t make up our mind, out of fear of upsetting people. We don't like making choices in case we upset each other.
Like do you want fish or chicken, I don’t know, what do you want. Then they choose fish and you wanted chicken. We all hate that!
Yet we decide something for ourselves every day, it is part of life. With each choice we make there is an alternative that splinters off into the universe and creates another you doing the other choice. Wow, I don't like that. I mean, there's another me who chose not to have chicken?!!
The most important thing to be with yourself is honest. So long as the choices you make come from the right place, and that should be the heart, the soul, the real you, then whatever you decide to do is correct. It may be hard, it may be difficult for people to understand. That is the beauty of life.
Chaos is choice, choice is adversity. Abraham Hicks.
We try to fight against chaos.
Exercise
Write down three big decisions that you made in your life. Look at them and try to figure out how you felt at the time, and how you feel now. Is it the same. Ask yourself this difficult question and see if what you did had lasting effects on where you are now. You don't need to ask if it was the right thing to do, just use this as an exercise to see how far you've come emotionally and hopefully, how strong it has made you.
we all change and grow. That is part of this experience. If you continue to learn, this life can be rich.
Watch Don’t Look Up, it's on Netflix. It’s about choice and reaction. If you want to watch the flip side of that film, then head to 1990's Armageddon. Sadly Bruce Willis is too old to save the world from a meteor anymore.
